Internet Connected, Water-Resistant Camera

The goal of this project was to create a prototype of a camera that could be tested in wet environments with real world users. The camera had to be easily installed on different surfaces and in different locations, 100% splash proof (IP66), connect to external solar panels for power, store energy for at least 4 days and use infrared LEDs for night vision.

Methodology
We started by paring down the electronic components and reducing Bill of Material costs to meet the prototype specifications. Once the BOM hit the desired price point, we set up sprints to design the upper and lower parts of the camera using Autodesk Fusion 360. Using our in-house 3D printer, we quickly iterated on the design based on fit and waterproof standards (IP – ingress protection).

Design
The system enclosure is comprised of two parts. The lower part holds the batteries and the Raspberry Pi, while the upper part holds the infrared LEDs and the camera module. We used O-ring stock to create a watertight seal between the two parts and then an O-ring in the upper part to seal the camera lens.

To mount this system, we designed a toothed knob that can be fixed to a post at a multitude of angles, creating a more flexible system.
